The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of adolescents¡¯ body image on self-esteem and the differences in effect according to gender and developmental stage. A survey was conducted to 392 students from middle and high schools selected in Gwangju. The instruments for this study were MBSRQ (Cash, 1990) and Self-Esteem Scale (Rogenberg, 1965). Correlations and ANOVA were conducted to analyze collected data. The major findings of this study were as follows : First, correlations between body image and self-esteem were highly significant except one sub-variable of body image, appearance orientation. Second, the effects of appearance evaluation and body area satisfaction on self-esteem reached significance. Third, for male adolescents, the effect of appearance evaluation on self-esteem was much higher than that of body part satisfaction. For female adolescents, the effect of body part satisfactyion on self-esteem was higher than that of appearance evaluation. Fourth, the effects of sub-variables of body image on self-esteem showed similar pattern for both middle and high school students.
